Argentina has appointed tech entrepreneur Alejandro Oxenford, co-founder of OLX, DeRemate and Letgo, as its new ambassador to the United States, following the appointment of Gerardo Werthein, who previously occupied this position, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship.

Oxenford is the co-founder of several successful tech ventures. He is the co-founder of Letgo (2025), a popular app for local buying and selling in the United States; OLX (2006), one of Argentina’s first unicorns and a leading online classifieds platform in Brazil, India, and Argentina; and DeRemate.com, an online auction site launched in 1999 that expanded across 10 Latin American countries and the U.S. before being acquired by Mercado Libre

In addition to his entrepreneurial background, Oxenford has made significant strides in the venture capital area. He led Alpha Capital Acquisition Company, which went public in 2021, and was a partner at Myelin VC, where he helped promote startups like Pomelo and Buenbit.

Oxenford’s appointment reflects President Javier Milei’s vision of positioning Argentina as a global hub for artificial intelligence development.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry expressed confidence that Oxenford’s” experience and commitment will enhance bilateral relations and foster a greater cooperation between Argentina and the United States.” Oxenford highlighted that trade, investment, culture and AI would be the cornerstones of his diplomatic agenda in Washington.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Oxenford emphasized his belief that Argentina is on the cusp of a transformative moment, noting, “Argentina is entering its best opportunity in a long time to reverse a century of decline… Once again, a visionary government aims to change the status quo and change the rules of the game to put in place more liberal and globally integrated policies. If stability, which is the goal, is achieved, and I personally believe it will be, then we are on the right track.

What we are missing is the emergence of a technological shift to ride on. It could be artificial intelligence (AI) or some version of AI. For the first time in 80 years, we have a president and a government that understands that this country desperately needs capital. And they are doing everything to attract it, with considerable success, through the Regime of Incentives for Large Investments (RIGI) and it seems likely there will be more investments in Vaca Muerta.”
